A dental filling is the most common treatment for tooth decay. Today, there are several types of fillings available, which differ in terms of material, appearance and price. So what options do patients have, and how do the different types differ?
Amalgam fillings
Traditional and previously the most commonly used fillings.
- Advantages: high resistance, long service life, lower price.
- Disadvantages: grey to black colour, contain metals that are hazardous to overall health, gradually giving way to more modern materials.
- Use: used historically or as an unaesthetic replacement, especially for back molars, or for decay at the root of the tooth, or if it is not possible to isolate a dry environment.
Composite (white) fillings
Currently the most popular choice due to their natural appearance.
- Advantages: aesthetic (blend in with the colour of the tooth), strong, gentle on the tooth.
- Disadvantages: higher price compared to amalgam, more demanding to produce.
- Use: front and back teeth – ideal if you want the filling to be invisible.
Glass ionomer fillings
A material with good adhesion and fluoride content.
- Advantages: quick and easy to make, release fluoride and thus protect the surrounding tooth.
- Disadvantages: less durable and shorter lifespan than composite.
- Use: children's teeth, temporary fillings or areas where there is not much chewing pressure.
Ceramic fillings (inlays, onlays)
A luxury option for demanding patients.
- Advantages: excellent aesthetics, excellent durability, long service life.
- Disadvantages: higher price, production requires more visits to the dentist.
- Use: large cavities where a classic filling would not be sufficient.
Gold fillings
Less common today, but still used in some cases.
- Advantages: extreme durability and longevity, biocompatibility, highly cleanable, long-lasting.
- Disadvantages: high price, visible colour, more visits to the dentist.
- Use: back teeth, where functionality is important.
In Japan and Korea, gold fillings are used almost exclusively. If the patient wishes, we can also make gold fillings.
Which filling should you choose?
The choice depends on the location of the tooth, the size of the cavity, aesthetic requirements and financial possibilities. Today, white composite fillings are most commonly used, combining durability and a natural appearance.
There are several types of dental fillings, each with its own advantages and disadvantages. Your dentist will recommend the most suitable solution after consulting with you and assessing your specific situation.
