White Dental Fillings

How to recognise tooth decay?

Some forms of tooth decay may be easily visible, while others can only be detected by a professional examination.

Symptoms of tooth decay:

  • White spots on teeth: One of the first signs of tooth decay may be the appearance of whitish, dull spots on the enamel, which are often a sign of tooth demineralisation.

  • Brown, black or grey spots: As decay progresses, it can become darker and form brown, black or grey spots on the teeth.

  • Cavities or holes in the teeth: As tooth decay continues to develop, it can create visible holes or cavities in the teeth.

  • Sensitivity to hot, cold or sweet: Teeth affected by decay may be sensitive to temperature changes or to the consumption of sweet foods and drinks.

  • Pain when chewing: Pain when chewing or applying pressure to the affected tooth may also be a sign of advanced decay.

  • Bad breath or unpleasant taste in the mouth: The bacteria that cause tooth decay can also produce unpleasant odours or tastes.

If you suspect tooth decay or notice any of these symptoms, you should see your dentist as soon as possible. Early detection and treatment of tooth decay can prevent further complications and save you time, money and inconvenience.
