Periodontitis is one of the most common oral diseases in adults. If not treated in time, it can lead to loosening and gradual loss of teeth. The good news is that with proper prevention and professional care, periodontitis can be stopped and gums and teeth kept healthy.
What is periodontitis?
Periodontitis (also known as periodontal disease, paradontitis and parodontitis) is a chronic disease of the tooth's supporting structures – the tissues that hold the tooth firmly in the jaw. Unlike common gum inflammation, the problem spreads deeper and also damages bone tissue.
If a patient underestimates periodontitis, irreversible changes and tooth loss can occur. That is why early diagnosis and treatment of periodontitis at a dental clinic is crucial.
How to recognise periodontitis – typical symptoms
- Bleeding gums when brushing your teeth or eating.
- Red, swollen or receding gums.
- Bad breath (halitosis).
- Sensitivity of teeth to cold or hot stimuli.
- Loose teeth or changes in their position.
If you notice these symptoms, it is advisable to visit a periodontist as soon as possible.
Causes of periodontitis
The main cause is dental plaque and tartar, which contain bacteria that cause gum inflammation. Other risk factors include:
- Poor oral hygiene.
- Smoking.
- Genetic predisposition.
- Diabetes and other systemic diseases.
- Stress and a weakened immune system.
- Inadequate treatment – especially overhanging fillings, crowns, bridges.
How is periodontal disease treated at our clinic?
-
Consultation and diagnosis: The first step is a detailed examination of the condition of your gums and teeth. Based on this information, we will prepare an individual treatment plan. The examination also includes records of dental plaque and tartar using advanced diagnostic tools.
-
Professional treatment by a dental hygienist – treatment according to the GBT (Guided Biofilm Therapy) protocol: During the visit, we will make the plaque visible with a special liquid, thanks to which both the hygienist and the patient know exactly which areas need the most attention. We also use the EMS Airflow device to gently remove plaque and tartar from the surface of the teeth and gums. This process is painless and non-invasive, meaning quick and comfortable treatment without the need for surgical procedures.
Advanced stages of periodontitis require the intervention of an experienced periodontist:
- Deep cleaning of periodontal pockets (known as deep scaling and root planning) – removal of bacteria under the gums.
- Laser treatment of periodontitis – gently eliminates bacteria and promotes tissue healing.
- Surgical treatment – in advanced stages, it is possible to treat the area around the tooth invasively with surgery, replenish bone tissue, or perform gum plastic surgery.
- Tooth extraction – if the damage to the tissue around the tooth is too extensive, it is necessary to extract the tooth and then replace it (dental implant, bridge, removable replacement).
- After treatment and follow-up care: After treatment, we will recommend home care and regular check-ups to ensure long-term results. Follow-up examinations will help monitor the health of your gums and ensure that periodontitis does not return.
