Preventive Examination at the Dentist – Why is Regular Dental Prevention Important?

You should visit the dentist for a preventive examination 2x per year, that is every 6 months. Health insurance usually covers a preventive examination 1x per year. Proper dental care should also include dental hygiene 1x every 6 months. Many patients therefore combine a visit to the dentist and dental hygienist into one appointment. Some may think a six-month interval is unnecessarily frequent, but regular dental prevention helps detect problems early and prevent more complex treatment.

Early Prevention at the Dentist Can Save You Pain, Time and Money

Does your tooth hurt or are your gums bleeding? Book an appointment with us for a preventive examination for both children and adults. The goal of preventive check-up is early detection of problems in the oral cavity, such as:

  • tooth decay
  • gum inflammation
  • periodontitis / paradontitis
  • tooth cracks
  • damaged fillings
  • other oral cavity diseases

Thanks to early diagnosis, most problems can be resolved faster, more gently and at lower costs.

Nothing Hurts – Why Go for a Preventive Examination?

It is a widespread myth that what doesn't hurt is healthy. There are dental diseases without pain that can go unnoticed for a long time. A typical example is developing tooth decay, which develops under the enamel and causes pain only in an advanced stage. Similarly, periodontitis can progress silently – gums may bleed slightly when cleaning, but significant pain appears only later. Also, inflammation of the tooth pulp may not be painful at first, even though irreversible changes are already occurring in the tooth. This is why regular preventive examination at the dentist is key, even if nothing hurts.

What Awaits You During a Preventive Examination

The duration of a preventive examination depends on whether you are visiting us for the first time and need an initial examination, or you are coming for a regular check-up. An initial examination usually takes about 60 minutes and a regular preventive check-up about 30 minutes.

  • Phase 1: Determining Your Health Status – Medical History – Fill out a digital form about your health status, medications and allergies. Tell us what is bothering you and what you would like to address. The doctor may also ask about breathing, teeth or temporomandibular joint (TMJ).

  • Phase 2: 3D X-ray of the Oral Cavity, CBCT – First and foremost, it is important to perform thorough X-ray imaging so we can make an accurate diagnosis and be minimally invasive. At our clinic, we work with modern X-ray devices with minimal radiation dose, such as 3D CBCT X-ray, 2D panoramic OPG X-ray and intraoral X-rays for interproximal cavities.

  • Phase 3: Examination by the Doctor – After the X-ray, you will sit in our chair and the doctor will perform a very careful examination with magnifying glasses. Only this way can interproximal cavities, poor fillings and other details be detected.

    1. Assessment of the overall condition of the teeth and gums – checking for the presence of cavities, cracks, tartar, assessing gum bleeding or swelling.
    2. Examination of fillings, crowns, bridges and dental implants – the dentist monitors whether they are functional, tight-fitting and not causing problems.
    3. Examination of soft tissues in the mouth – tongue, cheeks, palate, floor of mouth – to rule out pathological changes.
    4. Examination of temporomandibular joints and bite (if necessary).
  • Phase 4: Explanation of Findings to the Patient – We will explain the problems we found in an understandable way and specify a timeline for individual steps. You will receive all documents from us and can read them at home at your leisure. Our plans are set according to your individual needs – teeth whitening, dental hygiene, prevention and removal of tooth decay, endodontic treatment, periodontal care, dental implants, etc. We always respect your wishes and financial possibilities. That is why we discuss everything in detail with you.

  • Phase 5: Possible Referral to Our Dental Hygienist or Our Specialist for Further Treatment.

Preventive Dental Examinations for Children

Children's teeth may look healthy even when decay is already developing or inflammation is beginning. In children, problems spread faster than in adults and often don't hurt until it's too late. Regular preventive dental examination for children helps:

  • detect cavities early
  • monitor proper tooth development
  • prevent fear of the dentist
  • teach children proper hygiene

Bring your child's favorite stuffed animal and prepare them for a visit to the dental office in a calm and comfortable way.
