Wisdom Tooth Extraction

Eights – everything you need to know about wisdom tooth extraction

Wisdom teeth are the last set of teeth to appear in the mouth, usually between the ages of 17 and 25.

Wisdom teeth are the last set of teeth to appear in the mouth, usually between the ages of 17 and 25. Although they can be a healthy addition to your smile, they often don't have enough room to grow properly, which can lead to a number of problems. Wisdom tooth extraction is usually performed under local anaesthesia. This means that you will be awake, but the area around the tooth will be numb. After the extraction, you can expect some mild pain and swelling.

Why is it sometimes necessary to extract wisdom teeth?

  • Space limitations: Many people do not have enough space in their jaws for wisdom teeth, which can cause them to grow crooked or even remain hidden under the gums, leading to pain and infection.
  • Cleaning problems: Wisdom teeth are often difficult to reach for regular cleaning, increasing the risk of tooth decay and gum disease.
  • Discomfort and pain: Irregularly growing wisdom teeth can press on adjacent teeth, causing pain and other complications.

What to expect during extraction?

  • Consultation: A dentist or oral surgeon at our clinic will first perform a thorough examination, including X-rays (CBCT), and determine the best procedure for removing your wisdom teeth.
  • The procedure: Wisdom tooth extraction is usually performed under local anaesthesia. This means that you will be awake, but the area around the tooth will be numb. In some cases, especially for more complex extractions, sedation or general anaesthesia may be used.
  • After the procedure: After the extraction, you can expect mild pain, swelling, and sometimes bruising around the area of the procedure. Your dentist will provide you with instructions for aftercare, including recommendations for eating, cleaning, and taking pain medication.
