Teeth Whitening
Why is it not enough to have your teeth whitened only at the dentist's?
Teeth whitening performed only in the dentist's office will bring quick results, but without continuing at home, the effect will not last as long.
Teeth whitening performed only in the dentist's office will bring quick results, but without continuing the treatment at home, the effect will not last as long as it could. Why is that?
Why teeth whitening at the dentist's office alone is not enough (and why a smart combination is better)
Whitening is not a "magic flash", but a process. A procedure at the dentist's office can be a great start to changing the colour of your teeth, but without follow-up whitening at home and subsequent maintenance, the results often quickly lose their sparkle. Here's why:
1) Deeper stains need time
Pigments are also found in the dentine. A short, one-off application of peroxide at the dentist's mainly brightens the surface and the first layers. Longer, controlled application in home trays helps the gel penetrate deeper and the result is more stable.
2) "Rebound" after treatment is normal
After whitening, teeth are briefly dehydrated and appear lighter. Within 24-48 hours, they rehydrate and the shade returns slightly. The home phase in the following days fixes the effect.
3) Uniformity and shade adjustment
Every tooth is different. In the clinic, we whiten everything at once, but home trays allow us to gently target darker teeth and fine-tune the evenness of the result.
4) Less sensitivity, more control
Gradual doses of gel at home are gentler on sensitive teeth. If necessary, we will include remineralising gels and adjust the pace. In the clinic, we simply cannot manage this "fine tuning" in an hour.
5) Safety and predictability
Proper whitening begins with checking for cavities, sensitive necks and hygiene. The combination of the clinic + home means less risk of gum irritation and better oversight of the process.
