Dental Crown
Loose dental crown – what to do and how to prevent complications
In exceptional cases, even a firmly attached crown can become loose due to biting, cement wear or damage to the tooth to which it was attached.
In exceptional cases, even a firmly attached crown can become loose due to biting, cement wear or damage to the tooth to which it was attached. This problem is not only aesthetic – a loose crown can lead to tooth sensitivity, increased risk of decay or damage to surrounding teeth.
Why does a dental crown become loose?
- Excessive strain – hard foods or bad habits (biting your nails or pencils) can cause loosening.
- Cement wear – after several years, the strength of the fixation may weaken.
- Damage to the underlying tooth – decay, fracture or weakening of the tooth can compromise the stability of the crown.
- Poor hygiene – neglecting to clean your teeth and interdental spaces can lead to problems with the adhesion of the crown.
What to do if the crown loosens?
- Carefully store the crown and bring it with you to your dentist appointment – it can often still be used, and the sooner the crown is repaired, the lower the risk of tooth damage.
- Checking the tooth and crown – the dentist will assess the condition of the underlying tooth, remove any decay and prepare the crown for reattachment.
- Fixing the crown – the specialist will attach it with new cement or, if it is damaged, recommend a new crown.
A loose dental crown is not a problem that should be ignored. Proper care and a timely visit to the dentist will ensure that your tooth is protected and your smile is aesthetic and safe.
