Ceramic Veneers

How long do dental veneers last?

With perfect oral hygiene, veneers can last several decades.

The lifespan of a dental veneer depends primarily on the material and patient care. Well-executed ceramic veneers can serve 15 to 20 years, and with perfect hygiene, considerably longer. Composite veneers typically have a shorter lifespan — around 5 to 8 years — and are renewed more frequently due to loss of shine or minor chipping.

What affects veneer lifespan

Daily care plays a fundamental role, along with several other factors:

  • quality of the material used (all-ceramic vs. composite),
  • precision of bonding and margins — the better the veneer fits, the fewer microcracks and color changes,
  • nighttime teeth grinding (bruxism) — if not treated with a splint, it significantly shortens lifespan,
  • hard diet and bad habits (nail biting, opening bottles with teeth),
  • gum condition — if it recedes, the transition between the veneer and tooth may become visible over time.

How to make veneers last as long as possible

A patient with veneers should regularly visit a dental hygienist (every 3 to 6 months) and must not neglect preventive dental check-ups every 6 months to prevent veneer failure in time. If the patient cleans the interdental spaces very well with floss, there is no reason to worry — with perfect oral hygiene, veneers can last / serve several decades.

We recommend:

  • using a soft toothbrush and non-abrasive toothpaste,
  • daily cleaning of interdental spaces with dental floss or an interdental brush,
  • wearing a night splint if bruxism is detected,
  • avoiding chewing hard objects (ice, nuts in shells, pens).
