Periodontitis affects more than half of Czechs

Periodontitis, professionally referred to as periodontitis, is among the most common diseases of the oral cavity. According to available data, it affects more than half of the adult Czech population, and its incidence increases significantly with age. However, many people become aware of the problem only when teeth begin to loosen or even fall out.

What is periodontitis

Periodontitis is a chronic inflammatory disease of the tooth attachment apparatus — that is, the tissues that hold the tooth in the jaw. It affects the gums, connective fibers, and bone. It usually begins inconspicuously with gum inflammation (gingivitis), which manifests as bleeding during cleaning, redness, and swelling. If the inflammation is not treated, it progresses deeper, periodontal pockets form, and bone loss occurs. In advanced stages, teeth loosen and there is a risk of tooth loss.

Prevention of periodontitis

The basis of prevention is thorough daily oral hygiene — brushing teeth at least twice a day, using interdental brushes or dental floss, and caring for the tongue. Equally important are regular visits to a dental hygienist, ideally twice a year. Lifestyle also has a major impact: smoking, stress, unhealthy diet, and certain systemic diseases (such as diabetes) significantly increase the risk of periodontitis.

Treatment of periodontitis

It is never too late to begin treatment. Even in more advanced stages, the course of the disease can be slowed and the condition of the teeth stabilized. Treatment always proceeds individually according to severity — from professional dental hygiene and removal of tartar below the gum line, through treatment of periodontal pockets, to surgical procedures and regenerative methods. The key to success is patient cooperation, regular check-ups, and thorough home care. Early diagnosis can save even teeth that would otherwise be destined for extraction.
