Dental hygiene in the Czech Republic: only one fifth of people visit regularly

Tooth care is among the basic components of overall health, yet in the Czech Republic only approximately one fifth of adults visit a dental hygienist regularly. Most people visit a hygienist only when a problem appears — gum inflammation, bleeding, sensitivity, or visible tartar. Regular professional care can effectively prevent these issues.

How often to visit a dental hygienist

The general recommendation from experts is: visit a dental hygienist twice a year, approximately every six months. For patients with a tendency to form tartar, periodontitis, braces, or dental implants, a dentist may recommend more frequent visits — usually every three to four months. Regularity is key, because even with careful home cleaning, there remain areas in the mouth that a toothbrush and interdental aids cannot reliably clean.

Children come to hygiene appointments too late

It is advisable to start the first visit to a dental hygienist at the age of 3 to 4 years, when a child has a complete primary dentition. However, many parents bring their child for the first time only at school age, often due to tooth decay or gum problems. An early visit helps the child learn the correct cleaning technique, overcome fear of the dental environment, and develop healthy habits for life.

Dental hygiene detects problems early

A visit to a dental hygienist is not only for removing tartar and plaque. It also helps detect problems in their initial phase — small cavities, beginning gum inflammation, periodontal recession, or improper cleaning technique. Early detection of problems means simpler, cheaper, and less painful treatment. Regular hygiene thus protects not only teeth, but also the wallet.
