Treatment under anesthesia and analgosedation

How long is a child under anesthesia at the dentist?

The duration of general anesthesia depends on the type of treatment, but typically lasts between 30 minutes and 1 hour.

For many parents, the idea that their child will undergo a dental procedure under general anesthesia is associated with concerns. Logically, they therefore ask how long their child will be under anesthesia, how quickly they will wake up, and when they will return to normal life. General anesthesia in children is nowadays an absolutely common and safe method that allows even more demanding procedures to be performed without stress, pain, and unpleasant memories.

Duration of anesthesia in children

The duration of general anesthesia depends on the type of treatment, but typically lasts between 30 minutes and 1 hour. For more complex procedures — for example, when treating multiple cavities, extracting several teeth, or a combination of various procedures — the duration of anesthesia may be longer. During the entire time, the child is placed in controlled sleep, feels no pain or stress, and is not aware of the course of the procedure. An experienced anesthesiologist takes care of the patient's safety throughout, monitoring vital functions and adjusting the depth of anesthesia to current needs.

Waking up and stay at the clinic

After the procedure, the child remains at the clinic under professional supervision for some time to ensure that they wake up calmly, without complications, and feel well. This phase typically lasts approximately 30 to 60 minutes. Once the child is fully awake, oriented, and able to move independently, they can be discharged home in the company of their parents. Before discharge, we always discuss the next steps with the parents, provide them with instructions regarding diet, any medication use, and follow-up visits.

Return to normal life

After general anesthesia, recovery may be slightly longer than with lighter forms of sedation, but in most cases the child feels well within a few hours. We recommend rest for at least 24 hours before returning to normal activities — kindergarten, school, sports, or more demanding games. On the day of the procedure, the child should consume light food, plenty of fluids, and ideally spend time in a calm home environment under parental supervision.
