Immediate tooth implantation: reduce healing time and the number of treatments

A special treatment today is immediate implantation after tooth extraction.

What is immediate implantation?

Immediate implantation (often referred to as "tooth in a day") is a modern dental procedure in which a dental implant is inserted into the jaw immediately after the original tooth has been extracted. Normally, after a tooth is extracted, it takes 3 to 6 months for the wound to heal and the bone to grow back. With immediate implantation, we skip this step.

How does immediate implantation save you time?

What would normally take 6-15 months and involve up to 10 visits can take as little as 2.5 months and require only two sessions. Immediate implantation allows patients to minimise the waiting time for a permanent crown to just 2.5 months. Especially in the front aesthetic section of the dentition (from canine to canine), it is possible to immediately load the implant with a crown. You leave the clinic with a finished new tooth, without a gap after the removal of the original one.

How does immediate tooth implantation work and why does it work?

In immediate tooth implantation, we utilise the healing potential of the extraction socket after tooth extraction. By immediately inserting an implant into the wound, the body thinks that the tooth root is still present and there is no collapse of the bone or gums. Everything heals much faster and without pain! After each tooth extraction, the body minimises blood flow in the tooth area, causing the height, thickness of the bone and quality of the gums to collapse. This is crucial for the future implant.

Advantages of immediate implantation over delayed implantation

In most cases, delayed implant placement is a much more complicated process for both the dentist and the body. With delayed implantation, where you have had a gap for several years and are without a tooth, the condition of the bone and gums is not always ideal. Patients usually complain of food getting stuck under the crown, bleeding gums, or the feeling that the tooth is not part of their body. This often occurs in cases where the implant has been inserted into a site where the height, thickness and quality of the gums have collapsed. The dentist must then perform a form of reconstruction. Delayed implant placement does not increase the lifespan of the implant, but the implant is often accompanied by complications or even complete rejection.

Main advantages of immediate implantation

  • Time savings: The entire treatment process is shortened by several months.
  • Fewer procedures: Instead of two operations (extraction and subsequent insertion of the screw), you only undergo one. Everything is done in one visit under local anaesthesia.
  • Aesthetics: In most cases, a temporary crown can be placed on the implant immediately. The patient therefore leaves the clinic with a "new tooth" and does not have to worry about a gap in their teeth, which is especially important for front teeth.
  • Preservation of bone and gums: Immediate loading of the bone with an implant helps prevent its natural loss, which occurs after tooth extraction.
  • Food will not get stuck under the crown: with immediate implantation, we are able to achieve a 99% success rate and preserve the natural appearance of the tooth as if it were your own tooth in the gum.
