Dental Implants

How should I behave after having a dental implant fitted?

After the procedure, the critical phase of dental implant healing begins: by following simple rules, you can minimise pain.

After the procedure, the critical phase of dental implant healing begins: by following a few simple rules, you can minimise pain after implant placement, prevent inflammation and promote rapid fusion of the titanium screw with the bone.

During the first week after implantation

For the first seven days, stick to a soft, mushy diet and avoid anything sticky or hard – chewing gum, nuts or gummy sweets. The pressure of chewing could disturb the fresh wound and prolong healing. The same applies to bending over sharply; tilting your head back suddenly increases blood pressure in the operated area, which can cause bleeding and swelling. Gently rinse the wound with cold water or a recommended antiseptic and apply ice for a short time to reduce swelling and pain.

The first 14 days after implant insertion

During the second and third weeks, it is crucial to keep physical activity to an absolute minimum. Forget about running, the gym and contact sports; a sudden increase in heart rate could damage the developing bone bond around the implant. For the same reason, completely avoid saunas, steam rooms, hot tubs and hot baths, as thermal shocks and dilation of blood vessels slow down healing. Do not brush directly on the implant – just carefully clean the surrounding teeth with a soft toothbrush and protect the wound with an antiseptic spray or recommended mouthwash.

At least 4 weeks after implant placement

After about a month, the body will have formed a stronger bone cover around the screw, but continue to take care of the dental implant with caution. Rinse your mouth twice a day with antiseptic mouthwash, clean the adjacent teeth carefully with interdental brushes and dental floss, do not touch the metal parts with your tongue or fingers, and put away your sonic toothbrush at least until your check-up. Do not put pressure on the implant by biting hard foods during this time; your dentist will confirm when you can safely return to your normal diet and full physical activity during your check-up. By following these guidelines, you will promote problem-free healing and a long life for your new implant.
