Root Canal Treatment (Endodontics)

What does a dental abscess look like?

A dental abscess, also known as an apical abscess, is an infection that forms in the root of a tooth.

A dental abscess, also known as an apical abscess, is an infection that forms in the root of a tooth, usually as a result of untreated tooth decay or injury. It occurs when bacteria enter the root canal of the tooth and cause inflammation.

Appearance of the dental abscess:

  • Swelling around the root of the tooth: Visible swelling may appear around the affected tooth, which may be red and painful to the touch.
  • Pain and sensitivity: A dental abscess causes severe pain, which may be throbbing. Sensitivity to heat, cold, pressure or chewing may be pronounced.
  • Blister or abscess: A small blister or abscess (a small sac filled with pus) may appear on the gum, which may burst and release pus. This usually brings temporary relief, but it means that the infection has not been eliminated and may spread further.
  • Redness and inflammation of the gums: The surrounding gums may be red, swollen and tender.

If you suspect you have a dental abscess, it is important to see your dentist as soon as possible. An untreated abscess can lead to more serious problems, such as the spread of infection to other parts of the body. Your dentist may recommend treatment such as endodontic treatment (root canal therapy) or tooth extraction to prevent further complications.
